Buying your first MIDI controller can be confusing. There are hundreds of options across every price point, and the specs don't always make it obvious what actually matters. As audio engineers who use this gear every day, here's what we'd tell a friend starting out.
What Is a MIDI Controller?
A MIDI controller is a hardware device that sends MIDI data to your computer or audio interface. It doesn't make sound on its own. Instead, it triggers sounds from software instruments, DAWs, and plugins. Think of it as a musical keyboard that talks to your computer.
How Many Keys Do You Need?
This is the first question most beginners ask. Here's a practical breakdown:
- 25 keys — compact and portable, great for producers who mostly program beats and melodies in a DAW
- 49 keys — a solid middle ground for most home studio setups
- 61 keys — better for players who want more range without going full piano size
- 88 keys — ideal for pianists who want a full keyboard feel, often with weighted keys
If you're not a trained pianist, a 49-key controller is usually the sweet spot to start with.
Pads, Knobs and Faders
Many MIDI controllers include drum pads, rotary knobs, and faders alongside the keys. These are useful for triggering samples, adjusting plugin parameters, and mixing on the fly. If you produce beats or work heavily with samples, look for a controller with responsive, velocity-sensitive pads.
Connectivity
Most modern MIDI controllers connect via USB, which is simple and works with virtually every computer. Some also include traditional 5-pin MIDI ports, which are useful for connecting to hardware synths and other gear. For most beginners, USB is all you need.
Software Compatibility
Check that your controller works with your DAW of choice. Most major controllers support popular DAWs out of the box, but it's worth confirming before you buy. Some controllers also come bundled with software, which can be great value for beginners.
Budget
You don't need to spend a lot to get started. There are excellent controllers available at every price point. Focus on getting something that fits your workflow and upgrade later as your needs grow.
